Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治眼生黑白瞖, 隱澁難開, 無疼痛, 乃足太陽膀胱爲命門相火煎熬, 逆行作寒水瞖. 羌活ㆍ防風ㆍ黃栢各一錢, 荊芥ㆍ藁本ㆍ升麻ㆍ當歸ㆍ知母ㆍ生甘草各七分, 柴胡五分, 川芎ㆍ黃芪ㆍ葛根ㆍ細辛ㆍ生薑各三分. 右剉作一貼, 水煎, 食後服. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats black and white screens breeding in the eye with a hidden roughness hard to open and no pain, being the foot greater yang bladder scorched by the life gate's ministerial fire and running counter to make a cold water screen. Notopterygium, saposhnikovia and phellodendron 1 don each; schizonepeta, ligusticum, cimicifuga, Korean angelica, anemarrhena and raw licorice 7 pun each; bupleurum 5 pun; chuanxiong, astragalus, pueraria, asarum and fresh ginger 3 pun each. Cut up as one packet, decoct in water, and take after food. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The indication is the most theoretical in the chapter and the mechanism is worth following: the ministerial fire scorches the bladder channel, the channel runs counter, and what reaches the eye arrives as a cold water screen — heat at the source arriving as cold at the destination.
