Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肺虛, 遇風冷淚出, 冬月尤甚. 黃桑葉一兩, 木賊ㆍ旋覆花ㆍ白殭蚕ㆍ荊芥穗ㆍ甘草各三錢, 細辛五錢. 右剉取七錢, 水煎, 食後服. 或爲末取二錢, 荊芥湯調下. 《入門》

Translation

Treats lung vacuity with cold tearing on meeting the wind, worst in the winter months. Yellow mulberry leaf 1 nyang; horsetail, inula flower, silkworm, schizonepeta spikes and licorice 3 don each; asarum 5 don. Cut up 7 don and decoct in water; take after food. Or powder it and take 2 don stirred into a schizonepeta decoction. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Tearing that comes on in cold wind and is worst in winter, read as lung vacuity — so mulberry leaf and inula, both lung drugs, with silkworm for the wind. The description is of reflex epiphora in cold air, which has a mechanical cause, but the observation that it is seasonal and worse in winter is exactly right. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
