Translation

Treats a cough of many years' standing, wonderfully well. Cut up, make one packet, and decoct with three slices of ginger and a pinch of fine tea. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Eighteen materials at small weights, and the design is deliberately mixed: ephedra and mint to open the surface, gypsum and mulberry root bark to cool the lung, coltsfoot and aster to stop the cough, smoked plum and poppy capsule and schisandra to hold it in. Opening and astringing at once is what the chapter prescribes for a cough that has gone on for years and has both a dry and a productive side. **Contains poppy capsule, which is an opium material and a controlled substance, and pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed. Ephedra is a sympathomimetic and is contraindicated in hypertension and heart disease.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
