Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治燥痰ㆍ乾嗽ㆍ勞嗽. 貝母一兩, 瓜蔞仁ㆍ靑黛各五錢. 右爲末, 薑汁ㆍ蜜調成膏, 噙化. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats dry phlegm, dry cough and taxation cough. Fritillaria, 1 nyang; trichosanthes seed and indigo, 5 don each. Grind to a powder and work it to a paste with ginger juice and honey, to be held in the mouth and let dissolve. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three drugs, no decoction, and the form is the medicine: a honey paste held in the mouth and allowed to dissolve. Fritillaria and trichosanthes seed are the two standard drugs for phlegm too dry and sticky to be coughed up, and indigo takes the heat out. For a dry, unproductive, irritating cough this is close to what a modern pharmacy still sells as a demulcent lozenge, and the honey base is doing much of the work — honey has a measurable effect on nocturnal cough, better than most of what it has been compared with. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
