Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治膈噎反胃甚捷. 新採威靈仙四兩(搗取汁)ㆍ生薑四兩(取汁)ㆍ眞麻油二兩ㆍ白砂蜜四兩(煉去沫). 右同入銀石器內, 慢火煎如餳, 時時以匙挑食之, 一料決效. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats dysphagia with blockage and stomach reflux, and works very quickly. Freshly gathered clematis, 4 nyang, pounded for its juice; fresh ginger, 4 nyang, for its juice; true sesame oil, 2 nyang; white honey, 4 nyang, boiled and skimmed. Put them together in a silver or stone vessel and decoct over a slow fire to the consistency of malt sugar; let the patient take it from time to time on the tip of a spoon, and one batch will certainly answer. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Guto)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A spoonful of thick syrup taken a little at a time, which is exactly the right form for a patient who cannot swallow solids. Oil and honey slip past a narrowed gullet and clematis is the tradition's drug for a bone or a lump stuck in the throat, so the formula is aimed at the obstruction itself as well as at the dryness. Of everything in the 噎膈 group this is the one a modern reader can see working, for a reason the text does not give: it is calorie-dense, it is a liquid, and it is taken in tiny amounts.
