Translation

Treats stomach reflux with cold drool. The sign of it is that when an attack is coming on, cold drool flows first and the food is vomited after. This is a taxation pattern, and if it is not treated early death comes within a day. Rhubarb, 1 nyang, cut up; the natural juice of fresh ginger, half a bowl. Roast the rhubarb dry and quench it in the ginger juice, and go on quenching until the juice is used up, then slice it, bake it and powder it. Give 2 don each time, decocted with a pinch of old rice, two stalks of scallion white and a cup of water down to seven tenths; have the patient eat the scallion white first and then take the medicine, and in under ten days it is rooted out. ○ In dysphagia with blockage and a dry bound stool, using rhubarb is the method of treating the branch because the case is urgent; one should still give Four Substances Decoction with a boy's urine, Chinese chive juice and bamboo sap added, and give it freely. — Bonsabang 本事 · Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Guto)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One drug, processed at length: rhubarb roasted and quenched in ginger juice over and over until half a bowl of juice has gone into it. What that does is temper a cold purgative with a warm aromatic, so that it can be given to a patient who is vomiting — rhubarb alone would be thrown straight back. The Jeongjeon comment appended to it is the chapter's honest qualification: rhubarb here treats the branch, the closed bowel, and the root is the dryness of the blood, for which it sends the reader to Samul-tang with the three moistening juices. 急則治標 — treat the branch when the case is urgent — is the principle, and it is stated plainly. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
