Frankincense Settle Pain Powder

Yuhyangjeongtong-san

한글 유향정통산  ·  Pinyin Ru Xiang Ding Tong San

乳香定痛散

The transcription writes the name 乳香㝎痛散 and 白术; these are printed as 乳香定痛散 and 白朮 under the project's glyph corrections, and the name is registered in the corrected form. 生芐 is raw rehmannia, 芐 standing for 地黃. Given as 各等分 with no absolute weights; grams entered at 40 each as a notional equal share. The alternate name 活血止痛散 carries its own source label 醫鑑 and is not separately registered on this site.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four Substances with the resins added. Angelica, cnidium, red peony and raw rehmannia are 四物湯 with the red peony standing in for the white and the raw rehmannia for the cooked — the nourishing frame — and onto it go frankincense and myrrh, the two resins that are the materia medica's standard pair for traumatic pain, with moutan bark to cool the blood, angelica dahurica to reach the surface, and atractylodes and licorice to protect the stomach from the resins. Taken as a powder in equal parts of warm wine and child's urine. The indication is simply pain after injury, with no mention of bleeding, no purgative and no mineral, which puts it with 當歸鬚散 among the formulas meant for the days and weeks after the acute event rather than for the hour of it. Frankincense and myrrh are plausible analgesics in that setting, and the formula is one of the few in the chapter whose claim and whose contents are proportionate to each other. A second 乳香散 of similar purpose stands in this section and a third in the section on flogging wounds. **Child's urine is a human material and would not be used today.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
