Dragon Spring Powder

Yongcheon-san

한글 용천산 (제창) · Pinyin Long Quan San

龍泉散

The Bogam carries two formulas that romanize as yongcheon-san: the 婦人門 formula 涌泉散 from the Gangmok, for scanty or arrested breast milk, which keeps the bare id, and this 瘰癧 formula 龍泉散, which takes the chapter tail. 卽磨刀礪上粉也 is an interlinear 細註 glossing the substance and is marked as such. 龍泉粉, the fine abrasive sludge off a knife-sharpening stone, has no herb id and is left out of the ingredient list; the leaf glosses it itself, and it is named in the report. Its share of the 各五錢 is therefore not carried in the list. 鈆 is left as the transcription prints it. 三味酒浸炒乾 is read as applying to the kelp, curcuma and sparganium named immediately before it. The four-cornered iron ring, the oiled paper twist and the hot water are method and apparatus.

Donguibogam

Translation

Treats scrofula. White lead and dragon-spring powder (dry-fried) that is, the powder off a knife-sharpening whetstone, kelp, curcuma and sparganium, 5 don each — the last three steeped in wine and fried dry. Grind very fine, mix with hot water and paint it on the sore, and it answers. ○Where the first node of a scrofula has come out, hold it fixed with a four-cornered iron ring so that it cannot shift, break it open to make a mouth, and wick it with a twist of oiled paper; do not let it close, so as to cut off the source of the sore, and the effect is very quick. If the sore is not broken, or the patient will not have it broken, paint Dragon Spring Powder on it and change it every third day. — Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Five drugs at five don each, half of them mineral and half of them the softening group — white lead, the grey sludge scraped off a whetstone, kelp, curcuma and sparganium, the last three wine-steeped and fried dry first. Ground very fine and worked up with hot water, it is a paint rather than a plaster, renewed every third day. The ○ clause is the more interesting half of the leaf, and it is surgery. The first node of the chain is clamped in a four-cornered iron ring so it cannot slip, cut open, and wicked with a twist of oiled paper to stop the opening closing — 以絶其瘡源, to cut off the source of the sore. The theory is that the chain spreads from one parent node, and that holding that one open drains the whole disease. The paint is explicitly the fallback for a patient who refuses the knife. The theory is wrong and the operation was harmful: 瘰癧 is tuberculous lymphadenitis, the nodes are seeded from inside, and deliberately opening one creates the very thing that will not then heal — a chronically discharging tuberculous sinus. The chapter's own 禁忌法 says as much two pages later. **Contains white lead, absorbed through broken skin and a cumulative poison, and abrasive stone powder put into an open wound. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
