Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

巴豆三枚, 萆麻子七粒(幷去殼), 入麝香少許, 捏作餠子, 貼臍中, 分産卽以溫湯洗去. 歌曰, 巴三萆七脫衣裳, 細硏如泥入麝香, 捏作彈丸臍下貼, 須臾子母便分張. 《正傳》

Translation

Croton seed three, castor seed seven, both shelled, with a little musk added; press into a cake and stick it at the navel, and when the birth is delivered wash it away at once with warm water. A verse says: croton three and castor seven with their coats off, ground fine as mud with musk stirred in, pressed to a pellet and stuck below the navel — in a moment child and mother are parted. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

An external application rather than a medicine taken, and the whole of 1.25 works this way — a paste at the navel or the sole, removed the moment the birth is delivered. 分産卽洗去 — washed away as soon as the birth comes — appears in all four entries of this section and is the safety instruction. Both croton and castor are severe irritants and both are absorbed through skin. **Croton and castor seeds are toxic and absorbed through skin.
