Clinical commentary 臨床

Lead carbonate as the bulk of the powder, coptis for the heat, cnidium seed for the itch, and raw quicksilver stirred into sesame oil. 肺藏風 — wind in the lung viscus — is the chapter reasoning for a skin disease: the lung governs the skin and hair, so a creeping eruption is read as wind lodged in the lung and coming out at the surface. 浸展, creeping and spreading, is a good description of untreated scabies working outward from the first burrows. Mercury preparations were in fact used against scabies into the nineteenth century and they do kill the mite; they also poison the patient. **Contains metallic quicksilver and lead carbonate. This must not be prepared.** Elemental mercury rubbed into excoriated skin over a wide area is absorbed, and the chapter itself records mercury poisoning as a complication of this kind of treatment — 或誤服水銀輕粉而成風堆腫爛流膿出汁 at 天疱瘡. Scabies is cured now with topical permethrin or oral ivermectin. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
