Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

羚羊角(鎊)ㆍ獨活ㆍ酸棗仁ㆍ五加皮各一錢二分, 防風ㆍ薏苡仁ㆍ當歸ㆍ川芎ㆍ茯神ㆍ杏仁各七分, 木香ㆍ甘草各五分. 右剉作一貼, 薑三, 水煎服. 《正傳》

Translation

Antelope horn (filed to shavings), pubescent angelica, spiny jujube kernel and acanthopanax bark 1 don 2 pun each; saposhnikovia, coix seed, angelica, chuanxiong, poria with pine root and apricot kernel 7 pun each; costus and licorice 5 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger, decoct in water and take. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

子癎, child convulsion, is the chapter's name for fits arising in pregnancy, and what it describes is eclampsia. Antelope horn is the tradition's chief medicinal for extinguishing wind in convulsion, and the formula is built around it. The composition treats the fit as internal wind — pubescent angelica, saposhnikovia and acanthopanax bark are all wind medicinals — with spiny jujube kernel and poria to settle the spirit. **Eclampsia is a life-threatening obstetric emergency requiring magnesium sulfate and immediate delivery.
