Salt and Atractylodes Powder

Yeomchul-san

한글 염출산  ·  Pinyin Yan Zhu San

鹽朮散

The blue salt is parched with the atractylodes and then removed, so it flavours and dries the drug rather than entering the powder; it is listed because the source weighs it.

Clinical commentary 臨床

內外障, the inner and outer screens, are the Eye chapter's two great categories — the outer screen a visible film on the surface, the inner one a clouding behind a clear eye, which is to say a cataract. A cataract is treated by surgery and nothing taken by mouth touches it; a corneal opacity needs its cause found. The salt-parching is a technique rather than an ingredient: salt draws moisture out of the root and is then discarded, which is how the corpus dries a drug it means to act on damp. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
