Translation

Treats insufficiency of the liver viscus with the eyes dim and flowering, or breeding discharge and tears, and a woman's eye disease from blood vacuity. Korean angelica, chuanxiong, white peony and prepared rehmannia 1 nyang each; saposhnikovia, paper-mulberry fruit (stir-fried), plantago seed (wine-fried) and prinsepia seed (steeped in a decoction and the skin removed) 5 don each. Powder them, make honey pills the size of parasol-tree seeds, and take seventy with plain hot water between meals. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Samul-tang at full weight with four eye medicinals at half — the plainest statement in the chapter that a dim eye in a depleted patient is a blood problem first. Prinsepia seed and paper-mulberry fruit are the two drugs this chapter uses more than any other does; both are seeds, and both are held to reach the pupil. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
