越婢湯

The leaf is headed 越婢湯 while the 肺脹證 prose above it prescribes 越婢加半夏湯, and the composition given — the base formula with 半夏二錢 added — is the Jingui's 越婢加半夏湯. The transcription's head is printed. A separate 越脾湯 of the Gangmok, with black atractylodes in place of the pinellia, is registered from the Swelling chapter; the two are different formulas and the names differ by one character.

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

石膏四錢, 麻黃二錢, 甘草一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 入生薑五片ㆍ大棗二枚, 加半夏二錢. 右剉, 水煎服之. 《金匱》

Translation

Gypsum, 4 don; ephedra, 2 don; licorice, 1 don. Cut up, make one packet, add five slices of fresh ginger and two jujubes, and add pinellia, 2 don. Cut up and decoct in water. — Geumgwe Yoryak 金匱 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Gypsum and ephedra in a two-to-one ratio with pinellia added, and the indication is one of the most vivid in the Jingui: 其人喘, 目如脫狀 — the patient pants and the eyes look as though they would fall out. That is a description of a patient fighting for breath with the veins of the head engorged, and it is what an acute exacerbation of chronic airway disease looks like. **Contains pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed. Ephedra is a sympathomimetic and is not to be taken by anyone with heart disease, hypertension or thyrotoxicosis, nor with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor.
