Treats damp toxin in the intestine and stomach, with abdominal pain and diarrhoea, the stool passed like black-bean juice, or stagnant blood passed below. Ginseng, white atractylodes, red poria, tangkuei, chuanxiong, white peony, cassia bark and licorice, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add a pinch of foxtail millet and decoct in water. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter's opening formula and its most striking indication: stool like black-bean juice. That is melaena described exactly — the black tarry stool of upper gastrointestinal bleeding — and the Bogam puts it beside frank blood as two grades of the same thing. The formula itself is the Four Gentlemen's base with the blood quartet of tangkuei, chuanxiong and peony added and cassia bark to warm, so it treats the bleeding as a cold-damp injury of the bowel rather than an acute haemorrhage. For a true melaena this is not treatment; for the chronic bloody diarrhoea the chapter calls intestinal wind it is a reasonable warming and blood-nourishing prescription. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
