Translation

Treats stomach heat with middle wasting. Lotus root juice white lotus root is best of all, fresh rehmannia juice and cow's milk, mixed with powdered coptis and trichosanthes root, with ginger juice and white honey as assistants, worked into a paste. Take it up with a spoon, let it rest slowly on the tongue, and send it down with plain hot water, three or four times a day. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Sogal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

徐徐留舌上 — let it rest slowly on the tongue — is the instruction that defines the preparation. A paste held in the mouth before swallowing bathes the dry mouth and throat directly, which a decoction swallowed at once does not. Three juices and milk carry the formula, with only two powdered medicinals in it. That makes it closer to a food than a prescription, and the chapter places it among the middle wasting formulas where thirst and hunger are both severe. **Middle wasting with constant hunger and weight loss is diabetes mellitus and requires medical management.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
