Lychee Paste

Yeoji-go

한글 여지고  ·  Pinyin Li Zhi Gao

荔枝膏

Syrup formula: honey and mume flesh are simmered in 1.5 mal of water down to half and strained; the milk sugar is melted in, the ginger juice added and simmered again, and finally the musk blended through. Take one large spoonful in freshly drawn water, two to three times daily. The name is a flavor, not an ingredient — no lychee enters the paste; the finished syrup was prized for tasting like one.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Medicine disguised as a sweetshop — sugar, honey, and smoked plum doing serious fluid-astringing work, with a breath of musk to keep the whole confection moving. For the patient who will not drink another bitter decoction, this is the formulary's diplomacy. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
