Donguibogam

Translation

Treats worm thirst. Chinaberry root bark, a handful, cut and dry-roasted, with a little musk added; decoct in 2 jan of water down to 1 jan and drink on an empty stomach. Though there be exhaustion, it does no harm. Afterwards three or four worms come down, the thirst stops at once — and by this it is known that in the one pattern of wasting thirst there are cases where worms consume the fluids. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Sogal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The reasoning runs backwards from the result and the source says so: the worms come down, the thirst stops, 乃知 — and by this it is known that some wasting thirst is caused by worms consuming the fluids. That is an inference from treatment to diagnosis, and the chapter gives 蟲渴 its own section at 4.11 on the strength of it. Heavy intestinal parasitosis does cause thirst and wasting, so the category was answering something real. **Chinaberry root bark is toxic; overdose causes hepatic and neurological injury, and deaths are on record. Contains musk, CITES Appendix I and prohibited in trade. This must not be prepared or taken.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
