Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治黃疸, 身面如金, 小便如黃柏汁. 柴胡ㆍ升麻ㆍ草龍膽ㆍ茵蔯ㆍ黃連ㆍ黃芩ㆍ梔子ㆍ黃柏ㆍ木通ㆍ滑石各一錢, 甘草五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入燈心一握, 水煎服. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats jaundice with the body and face like gold and the urine like phellodendron juice. Bupleurum, cimicifuga, gentian, virgate wormwood, coptis, scutellaria, gardenia, phellodendron, akebia and talc 1 don each; licorice 5 pun. Cut up, make one packet, add a handful of juncus, decoct in water and take. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Hwangdal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

小便如黃柏汁 — urine like phellodendron juice — is the chapter's image for the darkest urine, and the formula contains phellodendron itself. That is not coincidence: the sign and the remedy are matched by colour, which is the resemblance reasoning the Accumulations chapter sets out at 1.8.14. Coptis, scutellaria, gardenia and phellodendron together are Hwangryeonhaedok-tang, clearing all three burners, with bupleurum and cimicifuga lifting so that the clearing does not merely sink. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
