Washing Formula

Tangse-bang

한글 탕세방  ·  Pinyin Dang Xi Fang

盪洗方

治同上 points back to the 去水膏 leaf immediately above it, so the indication is an opened abscess that tainted water has got into. No weight is given for any of the four drugs, and none is implied; the wash is made in whatever quantity is needed. 荊芥穗 is the flower spike, registered under 荊芥. The transcription prints 𤍠 and 温; 熱 and 溫 are printed above.

Translation

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four drugs, no weights, and a single instruction: boil them and wash the place warm. It is the companion to the 去水膏 dressing above it — wash first, then dress — and the pairing is the right order of operations. The choice of drugs is conventional for a sore wash. Hornet's nest is the chapter's standard external drug for a suppurating sore, sophora root is bitter and drying, dahurian angelica is the surface-opening drug used wherever pus is present, and Sichuan pepper is warming and mildly anaesthetic. Schizonepeta spikes go in when the surrounding skin is hot and angry, which is the leaf's one piece of modification. Irrigation is the oldest intervention in wound care and still one of the most effective: what matters is the mechanical flushing and the volume, not what is in the fluid, and clean water or saline is what is used now. 溫洗, washing warm rather than hot, is a detail worth keeping — hot irrigation damages granulating tissue. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
