Pill formula, bulk amounts: the honey is first refined in a silver or stone vessel, the powders stirred in, the musk added over a brief final boil, and the mass rolled into crossbow-pellet pills. Three times daily after food a pill is chewed slowly and washed down with mint decoction; then a second pill is held in the mouth to dissolve. If phlegm is exuberant, Sohwa-hwan is first swallowed rolled in malt syrup, then this pill is held while lying face-up, so the medicine streams into the lung's openings — the lung clears and moistens, the cough recedes, and in seven days the illness is healed.

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑
治虛勞, 肺痿久嗽. 天門冬ㆍ麥門冬ㆍ知母ㆍ貝母ㆍ款冬花ㆍ杏仁 各二兩, 當歸ㆍ生乾地黃ㆍ熟地黃ㆍ阿膠珠 各一兩半, 蒲黃(炒)ㆍ京墨ㆍ桔梗ㆍ薄荷 各一兩, 白蜜 四兩, 麝香 一錢. 右細末和勻, 用銀石器, 先下白蜜煉熟, 後下諸藥末攪勻, 再上火, 入麝香, 略熬數沸, 作丸彈子大. 每日三服, 食後細嚼一丸, 以薄荷湯緩緩化下, 次噙一丸如上法. 如痰盛, 先用飴糖拌消化丸呑下, 却噙此丸, 仰臥, 使藥流入肺竅, 則肺淸潤, 其嗽退除, 七日病痊. 《新書》
Translation
Treats vacuity taxation with Lung wilting and long cough. Asparagus root, ophiopogon, anemarrhena, fritillaria, coltsfoot flower, and apricot kernel, 2 nyang each; Korean angelica, dried raw rehmannia, prepared rehmannia, and pearled ass-hide glue, 1.5 nyang each; dry-fried cattail pollen, pine-soot ink, platycodon, and mint, 1 nyang each; white honey 4 nyang; musk 1 don. Powder finely and blend; in a silver or stone vessel first refine the honey, then stir in the powders, return to the fire, add the musk, boil briefly a few risings, and form pills the size of crossbow pellets. Three times daily, after food, chew one pill slowly and let it down with mint decoction, then hold a second pill in the mouth by the same method. If phlegm is exuberant, first swallow Sohwa-hwan rolled in malt syrup, then hold this pill and lie face-up, letting the medicine stream into the lung's openings — the lung becomes clear and moist, the cough withdraws, and in seven days the illness is healed. — Sinseo 新書 (Donguibogam · Heoro)
