Clinical commentary 臨床

Every drug in it is processed, and the processings are the formula: salt water for the tangerine peel, vinegar for the cyperus, ginger juice for the gardenia and the coptis, earth for the atractylodes, pig's bile over the coptis again. The aim throughout is to take the edge off cold bitter drugs so that they can be given to a stomach that is refluxing rather than merely hot. The indications — acid swallowing, gnawing hunger, vomiting of watery phlegm, pain behind the sternum — are the symptom set of gastro-oesophageal reflux, and this is the chapter's main formula for it. 嘈雜, gnawing hunger, is the Bogam's term for the hollow burning discomfort that is neither hunger nor pain, and it has a section of its own in the 內傷 chapter. **Contains pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
