Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治馬刀瘡. 連翹二錢, 生黃芩ㆍ柴胡各一錢二分, 天花粉ㆍ黃芪各一錢, 當歸梢ㆍ甘草各七分, 鼠粘子ㆍ黃連各五分, 紅花二分. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats the 馬刀 sore. Forsythia 2 don; raw scutellaria and bupleurum 1 don 2 fun each; trichosanthes root and astragalus 1 don each; the fine tail of Korean angelica root and licorice 7 fun each; arctium 5 fun and coptis 5 fun; safflower 2 fun. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and take. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The short companion to 連翹散堅湯 from the same source and for the same lesion, with forsythia at the head instead of bupleurum and only ten drugs. The architecture is Shaoyang: bupleurum and scutellaria for the channel that runs down the side of the neck, forsythia and arctium to scatter the node, trichosanthes root to soften it, and two fun of safflower at the end to move the blood in it. Astragalus is the one supplementing drug and is there because the lesion is chronic. 馬刀瘡 — the horse-knife sore, named for the long blade-shaped swelling it makes along the side of the neck — is cervical lymphadenitis, and in this chapter it travels with 瘰癧, tuberculous lymphadenitis. A formula of this kind can reduce surrounding inflammation; it cannot resolve a caseating node, and a hard neck node that does not settle needs tissue diagnosis rather than a second packet. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
