Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治氣作蠱脹, 但腹脹, 而四肢頭面不腫. 半夏ㆍ蘿葍子(炒)ㆍ甘草(灸) 各七分半, 紫蘇莖葉ㆍ縮砂ㆍ肉豆蔲ㆍ枳殼ㆍ靑皮ㆍ陳皮ㆍ三稜ㆍ蓬朮ㆍ檳榔ㆍ官桂ㆍ白豆蔲ㆍ蓽澄茄ㆍ木香 各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑三棗二, 煎服. 《直指》

Translation

Treats gu distension formed by qi, in which the abdomen alone is distended while the four limbs, head and face do not swell. Pinellia, radish seed (stir-fried) and licorice (mix-fried) 7.5 pun each; perilla stalk and leaf, amomum, nutmeg, bitter orange, green tangerine peel, tangerine peel, sparganium, curcuma, areca, cinnamon bark, round cardamom, cubeb and costus 5 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger and 2 jujubes, decoct and take. — Injae Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Changman)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The indication draws the line this chapter keeps drawing against the one before it: the abdomen alone is distended and the limbs and face do not swell. That is what separates gu distension from the oedema of the previous chapter, and the Oedema chapter states the same distinction from its side at 2.1.8. Sixteen medicinals with nothing that drains water, because on this reading there is no water to drain — the fullness is qi, and it is moved rather than expelled. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
