Storax and Qingzhou Pellets

Socheong-won

한글 소청원  ·  Pinyin Su Qing Yuan

蘇靑元

A compound of two finished prescriptions rather than of crude drugs; the ingredient list records them as their two chief constituents. 靑州白元子 is given in the Phlegm chapter, which is not yet transcribed on this site, so the name is left unlinked. 氣宇 is the qi of the chest and diaphragm.

Translation

Harmonizes the qi of the chest and disperses wind phlegm. Powdered Cheongju-baegwonja, 3 nyang; powdered Sohaphyang-won, 1 nyang. Mix evenly, make pills the size of a paulownia seed with ginger-juice paste, and take thirty to forty with weak ginger decoction. — Danggye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A formula made of formulas, in a three-to-one ratio, and the kind of thing a working pharmacy produces rather than a text: the phlegm pellets were already on the shelf and so was the aromatic qi-moving pill, and combining them saved compounding a third. The reasoning is sound enough — phlegm that will not move is often phlegm the qi is not moving — and the weak ginger decoction vehicle keeps the dose gentle. Its chief interest is as evidence of how the classical dispensary actually worked. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
