Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治溫熱瘟疫病. 川芎一錢半, 半夏一錢二分, 赤茯苓ㆍ紫蘇葉ㆍ柴胡ㆍ乾葛各一錢, 陳皮ㆍ枳殼ㆍ甘草各七分, 桔梗五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三片, 棗二枚, 水煎服. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats warm-heat epidemic disease. Chuanxiong, 1 don 5 fun; pinellia, 1 don 2 fun; red poria, perilla leaf, bupleurum and dried pueraria, 1 don each; tangerine peel, bitter orange and licorice, 7 fun each; platycodon, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes, and decoct in water. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · On)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The ten flavours of the name are the ten drugs, and they are graded rather than flat: chuanxiong at a don and a half and pinellia at a don two fun at the head, then red poria, perilla leaf, bupleurum and pueraria at one, tangerine peel, bitter orange and licorice at seven fun, platycodon at five. The body of it is Samso-eum's territory — perilla leaf, bupleurum, pinellia, poria, tangerine peel, bitter orange, platycodon — with chuanxiong promoted to the front, and the promotion is the whole point. The indication is a warm-heat epidemic illness, and chuanxiong is the drug the tradition reaches for when the head is the worst of it. A middle-weight formula for a febrile illness with headache and phlegm in a patient neither frankly cold nor dangerously hot. **Contains pinellia, which is toxic raw and must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
