Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治嘔吐咯嗽血, 及虛勞大吐血. 大薊ㆍ小薊ㆍ柏葉ㆍ荷葉ㆍ茅根ㆍ茜根ㆍ大黃ㆍ梔子ㆍ棕櫚皮ㆍ牡丹皮各等分. 右燒存性, 出火毒, 硏爲極細末. 用生藕汁, 或蘿葍汁磨松墨半椀, 調服五錢, 卽止. 《新書》

Translation

Treats vomiting, hawking and coughing of blood, and the great vomiting of blood in vacuity taxation. Cirsium, cephalanoplos, arborvitae leaf, lotus leaf, imperata root, madder root, rhubarb, gardenia, palm bark and moutan bark in equal parts. Burn them preserving their nature, let the fire toxin out, and grind to the finest powder. Grind half a bowl of pine-soot ink in fresh lotus root juice or radish juice, stir in 5 don and take, and it stops at once. — Sinseo 新書 (Donguibogam · Hyeol)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The most famous of the ash formulas, and still in use — Shihui San is in the modern pharmacopoeia for haemoptysis. Ten plants, all with some stanching action of their own, burnt and given in cold juice with ink. 出火毒 — let the fire toxin out — means spreading the charcoal to cool overnight before grinding, which the tradition held necessary for any burnt medicinal. Ge Kejiu's Ten Medicines is a short treatise on tuberculosis, and this is its first formula. **Haemoptysis requires investigation for tuberculosis and malignancy.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
