Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治下痢腹中滿痛不可忍, 此名陰陽反錯, 不和之甚. 大梔子仁ㆍ良薑 各三錢. 右爲末, 米飮調下二三錢. 《綱目》

Translation

Treats dysentery with fullness and pain within the abdomen beyond bearing; this is called yin and yang crossed in error, the disharmony being severe. Large gardenia kernels and lesser galangal, 3 don each. Powder, and take 2 or 3 don stirred into rice water. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs of exactly opposite nature in exactly equal weight — gardenia bitter and cold, galangal pungent and hot — for the pain the Gangmok calls yin and yang crossed in error. The construction is the diagnosis: when hot and cold are tangled, give both and let them sort themselves. It is the same reasoning as the ginger-and-tea decoction and the raw-and-cooked drink, and it reflects a tradition that had names for the state of not knowing. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
