Close to but not the same as the two formulas of this name already in the Bogam — the Immun's, which has 3 don of atractylodes with asarum and ligusticum and no notopterygium, and the Jipheom's, which has schizonepeta, pueraria and ephedra. The 咳嗽 formula is the only one of the three given for cough.

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治傷風頭痛ㆍ鼻塞ㆍ聲重ㆍ咳嗽. 蒼朮二錢, 羌活ㆍ川芎ㆍ白芷ㆍ細辛ㆍ甘草各一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑三ㆍ葱一, 煎服. 《得效》

Translation

Treats wind damage with headache, a blocked nose, a heavy thick voice and cough. Black atractylodes, 2 don; notopterygium, chuanxiong, angelica dahurica, asarum and licorice, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, and decoct with three slices of ginger and one stalk of scallion. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

An exterior-releasing formula aimed at the head rather than the chest: notopterygium, chuanxiong, angelica dahurica and asarum are all drugs for a wind headache, and what makes it a cough formula is 聲重, the heavy thick voice, which the chapter reads as the lung's qi blocked behind a blocked nose. Treating a cough by clearing the nose is an approach a modern reader will recognize. Cough following an upper respiratory infection, with nasal congestion and a thick voice, is largely upper-airway in origin, and the Bogam's instinct here is to treat where the trouble is. **Asarum contains safrole and is restricted to small doses in modern pharmacopoeias; the 1 don given here is above them.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
