Donguibogam

Translation

Treats an enduring dysentery without distinction of red or white; this medicine brings yellow stool back in its place. Stir-fried dioscorea, 1 nyang; stir-fried yellow millet, one hop. Powder, stir sugar into hot water and mix it with the drug powder to the right consistency, take it little by little, and afterwards rinse the mouth with clear rice water — most effective. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The indication is the most practical sentence in the chapter: it brings yellow stool back. That is the recovery endpoint a physician can actually see — the exudate giving way to ordinary faeces — and the Hoechun names it as the goal rather than naming a pattern. The preparation is food: toasted dioscorea and millet with sugar, taken as a paste little by little. For a patient coming off a long dysentery it is the right thing, and nothing in it is a drug at all. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
