Clinical commentary 臨床

This is the Shanghanlun's Bupleurum, Cinnamon Twig and Dried Ginger Decoction, carried into the malaria chapter with its composition intact and bupleurum raised to 3 don. The indication given here is the general one — an evil lodged between the exterior and the interior with cold and heat coming and going — and the chapter files it under cold malaria, which fits the dried ginger and the warm half of the formula. Oyster shell and trichosanthes root are the pair that makes this prescription distinctive. They soften and moisten where repeated alternation has already dried and bound things, and in this chapter that line of thinking leads on to the oyster-shell and turtle-shell formulas used for the malaria mother (瘧母), the palpable mass under the flank that long malaria leaves behind. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
