Sixteen Ingredient Flow the Qi Drink

Sibyungmiyugi-eum

한글 십육미유기음  ·  Pinyin Shi Liu Wei Liu Qi Yin

十六味流氣飮

The Bogam carries two formulas called 十六味流氣飮; this is the 癰疽門 one, and the 婦人門 formula for 妳巖 is registered as sibyungmiyugi-eum. The two share almost the whole drug list but not the doses: the 婦人門 leaf leads with 紫蘇葉 一錢半 and adds 靑皮 一錢 at the end, where this one gives all sixteen drugs at 六分 alike. The transcription prints 癕疽 for 癰疽 and 紫蘓葉 for 紫蘇葉, normalized here.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Sixteen drugs in equal sixths of a don, and the leaf tells you what that evenness is for: 表裏氣血藥, a drug for exterior and interior, Qi and Blood together. Ginseng, astragalus, Korean angelica and white peony hold the first two of those; saussurea, bitter orange peel, areca, magnolia bark, lindera and cinnamon bark move the Qi; siler, angelica dahurica, perilla leaf and platycodon work at the surface. Nothing in it is strong, which is the point — it is a formula for a swelling that has not declared itself. The Bogam reaches for it where it does not know what it is looking at: 無名惡腫, an unnamed malign swelling, and then at the end of the 腎癰 section, 五藏癰疽俱宜十六味流氣飮, all the visceral abscesses may use it. Those visceral categories — 心癰, 肝癰, 腎癰 — cannot be matched to modern diagnoses and are better left as the chapter's own, so this formula is best read as the Bogam's general answer when a swelling resists classification. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
