Translation

Treats a cold-repletion chest bind. Platycodon and fritillaria, 3 don each; croton seed with skin and heart removed, parched and ground to a paste, 1 don. Powder and mix evenly, and take 5 fun in plain hot water; halve the dose for a weak patient. The patient either vomits or purges. If there is no purging, give a bowl of hot gruel; if the purging will not stop, give a bowl of cold gruel. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han, lower)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Croton seed is a violent toxic purgative and the formula is in the registry for textual completeness only. What is worth noticing is the gruel instruction: hot gruel to drive the croton on, cold gruel to rein it in. The Bogam's authors had a thermal dial for a drug they knew was dangerous, which is a more honest piece of pharmacology than it first looks. The pattern — a hard chest bind with none of the heat signs of the preceding formula — is real, and modern practice reaches it through warming and phlegm-transforming formulas instead. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
