Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治厥陰證乾嘔ㆍ吐涎沫ㆍ頭痛, 及少陰證厥冷ㆍ煩燥欲死, 陽明食穀欲嘔者, 皆妙. 吳茱萸三錢, 人參二錢, 生薑四片, 大棗二枚. 右剉, 水煎溫服. 《入門》 ○一名吳茱萸湯.

Translation

Treats the jueyin pattern with dry retching, the bringing up of foamy drool and headache; and the shaoyin pattern with reversal cold and agitation to the point of wanting to die; and the yangming case of retching after eating grain — in all it is wonderful. Evodia, 3 don; ginseng, 2 don; fresh ginger, four slices; jujube, two. Cut up and decoct in water, taken warm. Also called Osuyu-tang. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One formula claimed for three channel patterns, which is unusual and in this case justified: all three presentations — retching with foamy drool and headache, cold limbs with agitation, vomiting after food — are the same physiological event, a cold stomach counterflowing upward, arrived at from three different directions. Evodia is the tradition's strongest drug for that counterflow and ginseng holds the middle while it works. Still prescribed, and the indication that identifies it most reliably is the one given first: a headache with retching that brings up clear foamy saliva rather than food. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
