Three Yellows Overcome Toxin Powder

Samhwangpaedok-san

한글 삼황패독산  ·  Pinyin San Huang Bai Du San

三黃敗毒散

The transcription writes 蚕 for 蠶 and 醫鍳 for 醫鑑; the standard forms are printed. The two dose glosses 上部倍用 and 下部倍用 are set as interlinear notes because the transcription encloses them in the double-angle marks; the ingredient list records the base weight of 一兩 for both drugs with the doubling noted in the prep field.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Twenty-four drugs at an even nyang each with a geun and a half of smilax over them — the section's omnibus formula, and the one the chapter's own index names as the general treatment. The three yellows of the title are scutellaria, coptis and phellodendron, draining heat from the three burners; around them is everything the book has for a skin toxin: the wind-openers, the four-substance blood group, the two skin barks and lycium bark, sophora root, caltrop, cicada slough and silkworm, honeysuckle and forsythia, coix and chaenomeles to carry damp down. The two glosses are the clinical content. Chuanxiong is doubled when the sores are above and akebia when they are below, which is a neat way of making one list serve the palmar and nasal lesions and the genital and leg ones — the former reached by a drug that rises, the latter by one that drains down the water passages. It is the only formula in the section that uses no mercury and no metal at all, and at twenty-five packets it was clearly meant for a long course. **Sophora root (苦參) in quantity is bitter and cold enough to injure the stomach, and silkworm (白殭蠶) is an animal material. Syphilis is curable with penicillin, and nothing here should be substituted for it.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
