Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治同上. 卽前方共半斤, 再加苦參 半斤. 右爲末, 酒糊或蜜和丸梧子大, 酒飮任下七十丸. 《入門》

Translation

Treats the same as above. It is the preceding formula, half a geun in all, with a further half geun of sophora root added. Grind to powder, bind with wine paste or with honey into pills the size of a seed of the parasol tree, and take seventy pills, washed down with wine as convenient. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

This is the preceding 加減通聖散 turned into a pill, with an equal weight of sophora root (苦參) stirred in — half a geun of the powdered base against half a geun of the new drug, so the finished pill is half sophora root by weight. That is a very large proportion for one bitter cold drug, and it tells you what the compiler thought was doing the work: sophora root was the standing remedy for itching damp-heat sores and for the ringworms, and the 通聖 base supplies the wind-dispersing and blood-cooling frame around it. The reason for the change of form is practical. 天疱瘡 — plum-blossom sores, which the chapter correctly knows to be passed between men and women in the bedchamber — runs for months, and a decoction cannot be kept up that long. A wine- or honey-bound pill at seventy a dose can. None of it treats syphilis; the natural course of the disease, including the disappearance of the first crop of lesions, would have been read as the formula working. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
