Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治惡阻病, 嘔吐痰水, 全不入食. 橘皮ㆍ赤茯苓各一錢半, 麥門冬ㆍ白朮ㆍ厚朴ㆍ人參ㆍ甘草各一錢. 右剉作一貼, 入薑七片, 靑竹茹雞子大, 同煎服. 《拔粹》一名人參橘皮湯. 《聖惠》

Translation

Treats the disease of malign obstruction, with retching of phlegm and water and no food taken at all. Tangerine peel and red poria 1 don 5 pun each; ophiopogon, white atractylodes, magnolia bark, ginseng and licorice 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add 7 slices of ginger and a lump of green bamboo shavings the size of a hen's egg, and decoct together and take. Clinical commentary 臨床

惡阻, malign obstruction, is the chapter's term for the vomiting of early pregnancy, and 全不入食 — no food taken at all — marks the severe form. Bamboo shavings at a lump the size of a hen's egg is a large amount and is what does the work here; it is the tradition's chief medicinal for retching from stomach heat. Seven slices of ginger alongside is also more than usual. **Persistent vomiting in pregnancy causes dehydration and electrolyte loss and requires medical care; hyperemesis gravidarum may need hospital treatment.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
