Clinical commentary 臨床

Bitter Orange and Atractylodes with the three yellows added — hence 'three supplements,' though what the yellows actually do is drain. Each is processed toward a different level: coptis and scutellaria in wine for the upper, phellodendron in brine for the lower. Beneath them the ordinary digestive crew handles food and Qi. The lotus-leaf-and-rice binder is the signature of this whole family, going back to Jichul-hwan itself, and it appears wherever a formula means to lift as well as move. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
