Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治婦人噫氣胸緊, 連十餘聲不盡, 噯出氣, 心頭略寬, 不噯卽緊. 香附子(醋煮)ㆍ梔子仁(炒) 各四兩, 黃連(薑汁炒) 二兩, 枳實ㆍ檳榔ㆍ蓬朮ㆍ靑皮ㆍ瓜蔞仁ㆍ蘇子各一兩. 右爲末, 水丸梧子大. 滾水下三五十丸. 《回春》

Translation

Treats a woman belching with the chest tight, ten and more sounds running on without ending; belching the qi out gives the heart brief ease, and without belching it is tight again. Cyperus (vinegar-boiled) and gardenia kernels (stir-fried) 4 nyang each; coptis (ginger-juice fried) 2 nyang; bitter orange fruit, areca, curcuma, green tangerine peel, trichosanthes seed and perilla seed 1 nyang each. Powder them, make water pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take thirty to fifty down with boiling water. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Naesang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The indication describes the complaint exactly as a patient would: belching in runs of ten or more, brief relief after each, and the tightness returning at once. That cycle — relief followed by return — is what marks it as depressed qi rather than as food or phlegm. Cyperus and gardenia at four nyang each carry the formula, and both are processed: vinegar for the liver, frying for the gardenia's coldness.
