Eight Immortals Powder

Palseon-san

한글 팔선산  ·  Pinyin Ba Xian San

八仙散

冬瓜仁 is entered under donggwaja 冬瓜子, the same drug under its other spelling, which is how the corpus already handles it in five places. The source label 湯氏 does not occur anywhere else in the corpus and is romanised Tangssi. 二分半 is entered as 1 g and 一分 as 0.4 g, following the chapter's weight table. The section prose at the head of 1.30 prescribes this leaf for the case with depletion wind and much phlegm, and 釀乳方 prescribes it by name once the vomiting has settled.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Eight drugs at two fun five ri each, with a fun of aconite added on top — gastrodia, typhonium, snake flesh, saposhnikovia, arisaema, half-summer leaven, winter-melon seed and scorpion. Everything in it except the leaven and the melon seed is a wind drug, and three of them are poisons. The weights are tiny, which matters, but the composition is the section's whole animal and tuber shelf in one packet. 白花蛇 is the flesh of a pit viper, dried; it is a protected species in much of its range and the trade in it is a conservation problem as well as a clinical one. The child is the 慢驚風 child; see the note on `baekchul-san-soa` for what is wrong with him and what would have reached it. **Contains aconite (川烏), typhonium (白附子), arisaema (天南星) and scorpion, given together to a child. Aconitine has almost no margin between an effect and a fatal cardiac arrhythmia, the lethal dose overlaps the therapeutic one, and no way of measuring the dose existed; typhonium and arisaema are toxic acrid tubers; dried scorpion is a neurotoxic venom that cannot be standardised. The text gives no dose by weight for the patient anywhere. This must not be prepared or given.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
