Warm White Pill

Onbaek-hwan

한글 온백환  ·  Pinyin Wen Bai Wan

溫白丸

The transcription writes 為 for 爲, normalized here, and 白殭蚕, which the corpus prints in that form. The run 白附子生南星炮各一兩 is read as 白附子(生) and 南星(炮), each with its own preparation note, rather than as a single drug 生南星 — the alternative would make the same drug both raw and blast-fried. The flour paste (麪糊) is the binder and stays in the transcription and the translation only. A separate formula 溫白元 is already registered under onbaek-won, the 局方 croton and aconite pill for accumulations; the two names differ only in the dosage-form character and the two prescriptions have nothing in common.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four wind drugs and a scorpion, in a flour-paste pill the size of a mung bean. Stiff silkworm, typhonium, arisaema and gastrodia are the standard quartet this tradition reaches for when a child twitches, and the dose climbs steeply — five to seven pills, up to twenty or thirty. The child is the 慢驚風 child, pale and limp after a long diarrhoea, and the reading of what is wrong with him and what would have helped is in the note on `baekchul-san-soa`. **Contains raw typhonium (白附子) and arisaema (天南星), both toxic tubers whose acridity is only partly removed by the processing given here, together with scorpion, a neurotoxic animal venom. The patient is a child and the text gives no dose by weight anywhere — the instruction is a count of pills, and the count may be multiplied sixfold at the practitioner's discretion. Raw typhonium and arisaema are severe mucosal irritants and are given processed for that reason; the 生 marked on the typhonium here means it is not. This must not be prepared or given.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
