Fritillaria Salve

Paemo-go

한글 패모고  ·  Pinyin Bei Mu Gao

貝母膏

The transcription sets 生用 twice in ≪≫; both are preparation glosses and are printed in parentheses. The leaf's 貝母三錢半半夏 is read 貝母 三錢半, then 半夏 — the half belongs to the fritillaria's three don. 南星 is entered under 天南星 and 黃栢 is left as the transcription prints it. The salve is called a 膏 but is in fact a powder, mixed up at the time of use or dusted on dry.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Nine drugs, and only one of them is the fritillaria the formula is named for. Raw pinellia and raw arisaema are the acrid, irritant pair; gallnut is the astringent that dries a weeping surface; phellodendron and sophora root cool and are both bitter antipruritics; angelica dahurica is the chapter's standing sore drug; minium and realgar are the metals. It is a drying, eroding powder rather than a soothing one, and the instruction to dust it on dry (乾糝) is the more characteristic use. The name 膏 is misleading — there is no fat and no wax, and the honey water is mixed in only at the time of application. **Contains minium (lead tetroxide) and realgar (arsenic sulfide), both dusted directly onto open sores, where lead and arsenic are absorbed. It also contains raw pinellia and raw arisaema, which are severely irritant until properly processed and are specified here as raw. This must not be prepared.** The two cooling drugs in it, phellodendron and sophora root, are the only part of the formula with a defensible topical rationale. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
