Donguibogam

Translation

Treats spleen diarrhoea. Evodia, picked clean, 5 don each time, boiled in plain water, the dregs discarded, a little salt added, and drunk off at a mouthful. For evodia can warm the bladder, and once the water way is cleared the large intestine secures itself; other drugs, warm though they be, cannot separate the clear from the turbid. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One drug, and the Deukhyo makes an argument for it: evodia warms the bladder, the urine then carries the water off, and the bowel secures itself — and no other warm drug can separate the clear from the turbid in this way. That is the chapter's water-redirection theory in its purest form, staked on a single ingredient. Evodia's rutaecarpine and evodiamine do have real gastrointestinal activity, slowing transit and reducing secretion, so a strong decoction of it may well have stopped a diarrhoea, though not by way of the bladder. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
