Pill formula, bulk amounts: all but the halloysite and myrrh are cut, soaked in wine three days, baked dry, and powdered to make a full 15 nyang; sifted very fine, the separately ground halloysite and myrrh are stirred in, and refined honey binds pills the size of crossbow pellets. One pill on an empty stomach before cockcrow: first rinse the mouth with warm tea or a mint decoction, then chew it finely and send it down with warm wine or plain hot water, pressing it down with something dry. Taking it a month brings the effect. Also called Yeogeum-dan (女金丹), the Woman's Golden Elixir; a version without cassia heart and with prepared rehmannia serves likewise.

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治婦人無子. 香附子(搗去皮毛, 醋水浸三日, 炒乾細末) 十五兩, 當歸 二兩, 白芍藥ㆍ川芎ㆍ赤石脂ㆍ藁本ㆍ人參ㆍ牡丹皮ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ白薇ㆍ桂心ㆍ白芷ㆍ白朮ㆍ玄胡索ㆍ沒藥 各一兩. 右除石脂ㆍ沒藥外, 餘藥剉, 酒浸三日, 焙乾爲末, 足十五兩, 重羅極細, 入別硏赤石脂ㆍ沒藥末, 煉蜜和丸彈子大. 每取一丸, 空心, 雞未鳴時, 先以溫茶或薄荷湯漱口, 後細嚼, 溫酒或白湯送下, 以乾物壓下, 服至一月卽效. 一名女金丹. 《廣嗣》 ○無桂心, 有熟地黃, 治婦人無子. 或無痰火等疾, 經候亦調, 容顔不減, 但久無孕, 乃子宮有陰無陽, 不能生發, 宜服此, 鼓動微陽, 一月卽效. 或赤白帶下ㆍ崩漏, 及血風ㆍ血氣ㆍ虛勞諸證, 無所不治, 眞女中金丹也. 《入門》

Translation

Treats a woman without children. Cyperus (pounded to remove skin and hairs, soaked three days in vinegar water, dry-fried and finely powdered) 15 nyang; Korean angelica 2 nyang; white peony, cnidium, halloysite, ligusticum, ginseng, moutan bark, white poria, cynanchum atratum, cassia heart, angelica dahurica, white atractylodes, corydalis, and myrrh, 1 nyang each. Of the above, all but the halloysite and myrrh are cut, soaked in wine three days, baked dry, and powdered to a full 15 nyang; sift very fine, stir in the separately ground halloysite and myrrh, and bind with refined honey into pills the size of crossbow pellets. Take one pill on an empty stomach before the cock has crowed: first rinse the mouth with warm tea or a mint decoction, then chew finely and send it down with warm wine or plain hot water, pressing it down with something dry. Taken for a month, it takes effect. Also called Yeogeum-dan. — A version without cassia heart and with prepared rehmannia treats a woman without children: where there is no phlegm-fire or other illness, the menses are regular and the complexion undiminished, yet for long there has been no pregnancy — this is the palace of the child having Yin without Yang, unable to engender and effuse. Taking this stirs the faint Yang, and in a month it takes effect. Clinical commentary 臨床

The women's counterpart to the male shelf, and its indication names a situation every fertility clinic knows: no phlegm-fire illness, the cycle regular, the complexion undiminished — and still, for a long time, no pregnancy. The formulary's reading is that the uterus holds Yin without Yang and so cannot engender, and its answer is fifteen ounces of cyperus with a warm, moving crew behind it.
