Jade Candle Powder

Okchok-san

한글 옥촉산 (옹저)  ·  Pinyin Yu Zhu San

玉燭散

The Bogam carries two leaves called 玉燭散 and they are close: the Womb chapter's 丹心 formula, registered as okchok-san, is 當歸ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ川芎ㆍ熟地黃ㆍ大黃ㆍ芒硝ㆍ甘草, all seven at 1 don, for 月候凝滯不通. This leaf is the 正傳 formula from the 便癰 section, with raw rehmannia for cooked, red peony for white, and the rhubarb and mirabilite doubled to 2 don, for 便毒腫痛. Same skeleton, different drugs in two of seven places, different weights, different source and a different indication, so it is registered separately. The transcription writes 偏毒 for the section's 便毒; see the note on Sodok-eum. The collation line reading 王 against the 初刊本's 干 falls at the foot of this leaf's span in the transcription, at the page boundary before [004a], but the word it annotates is the 射王 of Sobang-san two leaves earlier on the same page, not anything in this leaf.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Samul-tang and the purging pair joined in one packet, as the Womb chapter's formula of the same name is — but every substitution in this version runs the same way. Cooked rehmannia becomes raw, white peony becomes red, and rhubarb with mirabilite doubles to 2 don apiece. That turns a formula which nourishes blood while it purges into one which cools and moves blood while it purges harder, which is what a hot swollen groin wants and what a blocked menses does not. The name is from the Erya's phrase for the four seasons in harmony, 四氣和謂之玉燭, and belongs properly to the gynaecological formula; the surgical chapter has borrowed it along with the architecture. The lesion is the same as the other 便癰 formulas: a hot, swollen, painful node in the groin. This is the version for the patient who is bound as well as hot, with the purge carrying the weight. **Contains rhubarb and mirabilite. Contraindicated in pregnancy, and not to be used where the stool is already loose. An inguinal abscess that has pointed needs drainage, and a bubo following a genital ulcer needs testing for sexually transmitted infection.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
