Jade Countenance Ointment

Ogyong-go

한글 옥용고  ·  Pinyin Yu Rong Gao

玉容膏

The transcription opens a fine-print tag at 一名玉容西施膏 and never closes it, so the whole leaf is marked as a note; only the alternative name belongs in fine print. The 膏 of this formula is not the 散 of 玉容西施散, which is a separate washing powder in the same chapter.

Translation

Also called Jade Countenance Xi Shi Ointment. Smeared on dry sores. Astragalus, Korean angelica, angelica dahurica, cnidium, agastache, loosestrife herb, sandalwood, cyperus, ampelopsis, white peony, bletilla and apricot kernel 1 nyang each; one trichosanthes fruit; borneol 2 don; clear sesame oil 4 geun; beeswax 1 geun. Set the borneol aside, cut up the rest and steep it in the oil — five days in spring, three in summer, seven in autumn, ten in winter. When the days are up, heat it in a stone vessel until the angelica dahurica scorches to a yellow brown, then strain off the dregs, put in the wax and let it melt, strain again, stir in the borneol until even, and seal it tightly for use. In winter halve the wax. — Sujin Bang 袖珎 (Donguibogam · Myeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

An oil and wax ointment rather than a wash, and the only one of the face formulas built for skin that is dry and split rather than blemished. The method is the substance of the leaf: a long cold steep of the herbs in sesame oil, then a slow heat with angelica dahurica as the doneness indicator, then beeswax to body it and borneol stirred in after the heat so the volatile part survives. Halving the wax in winter is a working adjustment for a salve that would otherwise set too hard to spread. Read plainly it is an emollient — sesame oil and beeswax do most of what it claims, which is to keep a cracked surface closed. The aromatics are there for the smell and for the tradition's reading of a dry sore as wind in the skin. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
