Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治難産胎乾, 子死危急者. 先進佛手散探之, 的知胎死, 則進此藥, 後更進香桂散, 卽下. 卽上黑神散一名也.

Translation

Treats a difficult birth with the passage dry and the child dead, the case grave. First give Buddha's Hand Powder to test it; once it is certainly known that the foetus is dead, give this medicine, and afterwards give Fragrant Cinnamon Powder, and it comes down. It is another name for the Black Spirit Powder above. — Donguibogam · Buin

Clinical commentary 臨床

先進佛手散探之 — first give Buddha's Hand Powder to test it — is the sequence's first step and it is diagnostic rather than therapeutic. Bulsu-san is chuanxiong and angelica; the chapter's 1.26 section uses the response to it to determine whether the foetus is alive. Three medicines in order: one to test, one to bring down, one to finish.
