Aconite and Atractylodes Pill

Ochul-hwan

한글 오출환  ·  Pinyin Wu Zhu Wan

烏朮丸

Pill formula, bulk amounts: powdered and bound with honey into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; 30–50 pills with salted water or warm wine on an empty stomach. The preparations are the formula's signature — atractylodes steeped ten days in east-flowing water, aconite main tuber soaked five days in daily-changed rice water then blast-fried, and Sichuan pepper sweated open on a vinegar-doused red-hot brick. Note on modern practice: cheono (川烏, aconite main tuber) is a regulated toxic medicinal; it is used only processed and prescribed with caution today.

Translation

Treats vacuity taxation; supplements Spleen and Kidney, strengthens sinew and bone, and warms the lower origin. Atractylodes (steeped ten days in east-flowing water, peeled, sliced, and stone-baked) half a geun; aconite main tuber (steeped five days in rice water changed daily, blast-fried, peel and navel removed), Sichuan pepper (open-mouthed ones, sweated on a red-hot brick doused with vinegar, the reddened ones taken), and green tangerine peel (white removed), 3 nyang each; blue rock salt 1 nyang, ground separately. Powder the above and bind with honey into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; take 30–50 pills with salted water or warm wine on an empty stomach. — Yuchwi 類聚 (Donguibogam · Heoro)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The rough trades' tonic — no rehmannia, no antler, just fire-forged warmth and salt for the laborer whose depletion is all cold and damp. The elaborate detoxifying preparations are the formula's real text: this much heat is only usable after this much taming. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
