Winter Sacrifice Salve

한글 납향고  ·  Pinyin La Xiang Gao

臘享膏

猯油, badger oil, has no identifier in the herb list — 猯肉 is the meat, a different drug — and is left out of the ingredients. 海松子油 is registered under the pine nut it is pressed from. This is the only 俗方 leaf in the group, and the only one without a Chinese source.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Six fats, waxes and resins and nothing else: two animal fats, two plant oils, pine resin and beeswax, each rendered and strained separately and then combined. There is no active drug at all. It is a barrier ointment, and the name points at the season it was made in — the 臘 rites fall in the twelfth month, when the fats were gathered. For chilblains this is close to right. The injury is to skin repeatedly chilled and rewarmed, and what it needs is insulation, occlusion and protection from further cold; the resin and wax give the salve body and make it stay where it is put, and the oils keep the fissures from opening. A Korean household remedy, recorded as 俗方 because it had no textual authority behind it, and the most sensible formula in this group. 凍瘡 at 2.14 also covers true frostbite, where a grease is not the answer: frozen tissue wants rapid rewarming in water near body temperature, no rubbing, no dry heat, and no surgical decision until the boundary between living and dead tissue has declared itself over weeks. **Raw rendered animal fat on an open sore carries an infection risk** and the ointment should be used on intact or barely broken skin only. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
