Translation

Treats a red-vessel screen coming down from above; this belongs to the greater yang and should be warmed and dispersed. Tea buds, aconite accessory root and angelica dahurica 1 don each; asarum, chuanxiong, saposhnikovia, notopterygium and schizonepeta half a don each. Cut up as one packet, add a pinch of salt, and decoct in water. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter's one warming formula for a red eye, and the reason is directional: vessels creeping down from above enter by the greater yang, so the Gangmok treats them with aconite and wind drugs rather than with anything cold. Which direction the vessels run decides the channel and so the formula — the clearest instance in the chapter of reading an eye by its geometry. **Contains aconite accessory root, which is toxic. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
